How To Properly Treat Hot Tub Foam – Complete Guide

OUR HOT TUB BLOG

Anyone who owns a hot tub will tell you that it’s the best investment they’ve ever made for their health and relaxation. However, as soothing and comforting as they are, they also require regular maintenance and upkeep.

Hot tub foam or foamy water is perhaps one of the most frequently reported issues people face and luckily, this problem can be easily avoided with a few simple measures taken by you.

What Causes Hot Tub Foam?

Foam requires three things: water, air, and surfactants. Surfactants are basically super-sticky molecules present in everything from the personal care products we use to the dirt and oil humans naturally produce.

Because of the way these chemicals react to the water, they tend to stack on top of each other and you’ll start to see bubbles. The dirtier the water, the more bubbles you will see.

How To Get Rid of Hot Tub Foam

If you have foam in your spa, then one of the first things you should do is test the chemistry of the water in it. You’ve probably heard this several times before, but the chemistry of the water in your spa is of utmost importance.

While testing, look out for the pH levels, alkalinity, and total dissolved solids (TDS). You should also check for calcium hardness since low calcium can cause foaming. Chlorine granules can come in really handy here.

Next, you should drain the water and clean your hot tub thoroughly. If there’s too much hot tub foam, you may have to replace the filters and even do a line flush. If you don’t have a hot tub cleaner, you can use one part of white vinegar and four parts of water to thoroughly clean the interior surface of the spa.

If you’re in a hurry, you can use a hot tub foam remover as well. However, this is a temporary measure and it’s really important to hire a professional who can check your filters and see if they need to be replaced.

How To Prevent Hot Tub Foam From Happening

Fortunately, it’s really easy to prevent foamy water, since much of it is caused by the personal care products we use and the oil our body produces.

Never step inside the spa without taking a shower first to rinse off, and make sure your guests follow this rule, as well.

In addition, you should always clean your swimwear before you step inside the hot tub. It’s also a good idea to wear a cap if you’ve recently shampooed your hair or are using any other products (and yes, this applies to beards, too). Finally, keep all beverages away from the spa to prevent them from spilling into the spa.
